Foundation Flags-off Math Project, to train 300 Teachers in Lagos

The Bunmi Adedayo Foundation has flagged-off it's Subject Enhancement Programme in Mathematics (SEP-M), to train and equip teachers with cognitive, pedagogic and 21st century skills to deliver effective Math lessons.

The Project which is one of the Foundation’s education intervention programmes is sponsored with the Google Impact Challenge funds and would benefit 300 teachers, selected from 300 low-middle cost primary schools in Lagos State.

While addressing the beneficiaries at the event, the Foundation's Managing Consultant representing the Foundation’s Board, Femi Martins, disclosed that the project is a response to the worrisome content and pedagogic competency gaps that was discovered existed among Math teachers in Lagos State. According to him, this is responsible for the popular erroneous perception among most learners that Math is a difficult subject which in turn leads to poor pupil performance.

"As first set of beneficiaries of the SEP series, I charge you all to be committed and disciplined as we take you on a journey to becoming better so you can continue to add value to thousands of people that would pass through you. It is therefore very imperative that you get it right now. In this project, there will be a total of 5 sessions, (3 in-class and 2 online) and they are researched-based contents to be delivered by outstanding team of Facilitators,” Femi said.

Femi, who is also the CEO, of Impact-Base Consulting, disclosed to the beneficiaries that in addition to the T-shirt, note pad, pen and manual they have received, the Foundation would be supporting them with allowances to cover for the data and transportation expenses.

Also, the CEO of Nurture House Consulting, the Project Technical Partner Mrs. Ayopeju Njideaka, told the audience that there was more to Math than the numbers or the topics being taught. She reminded them that as classroom teachers they have the power to change the outcomes of learning if they can improve on their style of teaching and develop the right attitude towards the learners.

"Your major work as Math teachers is not to teach Math, but to help the students believe they can also do Math. Be open minded, be ready to debunk old and limiting beliefs, embrace new ways and be ready to take the children to fly as high as they can", the Math expert charged.

The representative of Rite Foods Limited, the Refreshment Partner, Mr. Olawale Odenusi, described teachers as people who empower the society and build the nation through the classroom. "Your impact in the classrooms contribute to what we enjoy as a nation. I charge you to be fearless in your teaching responsibilities," Wale continued.

Earlier, the Project Manager, Ms. Ovigue Akpodikere reiterated the Foundation’s commitment to it’s vision of improving the Learning outcomes of Primary education in Nigeria through its teacher development and school leadership improvement initiatives. She appreciated all the Sponsors and Partners including Tastee Fried Chicken for always standing to support the works of the Foundation
